Observation of a super-tetrahedral cluster of acetonitrile-solvated dodecaborate dianion via dihydrogen bonding

We launched a combined negative ion photoelectron spectroscopy and multiscale theoretical investigation on the geometric and electronic structures of a series of acetonitrile-solvated dodecaborate clusters, i.e., B12H122−·nCH3CN (n = 1–4). The electron binding energies of B12H122−·nCH3CN are observed to increase with cluster size, suggesting their enhanced electronic stability. B3LYP-D3(BJ)/ma-def2-TZVP geometry optimizations indicate each acetonitrile molecule binds to B12H122− via a threefold dihydrogen bond (DHB) B3–H3 ⁝⁝⁝ H3C–CN unit, in which three adjacent nucleophilic H atoms in B12H122− interact with the three methyl hydrogens of acetonitrile. The structural evolution from n = 1 to 4 can be rationalized by the surface charge redistributions through the restrained electrostatic potential analysis. Notably, a super-tetrahedral cluster of B12H122− solvated by four acetonitrile molecules with 12 DHBs is observed. The post-Hartree–Fock domain-based local pair natural orbital- coupled cluster singles, doubles, and perturbative triples [DLPNO-CCSD(T)] calculated vertical detachment energies agree well with the experimental measurements, confirming the identified isomers as the most stable ones. Furthermore, the nature and strength of the intermolecular interactions between B12H122− and CH3CN are revealed by the quantum theory of atoms-in-molecules and the energy decomposition analysis. Ab initio molecular dynamics simulations are conducted at various temperatures to reveal the great kinetic and thermodynamic stabilities of the selected B12H122−·CH3CN cluster. The binding motif in B12H122−·CH3CN is largely retained for the whole halogenated series B12X122−·CH3CN (X = F–I). This study provides a molecular-level understanding of structural evolution for acetonitrile-solvated dodecaborate clusters and a fresh view by examining acetonitrile as a real hydrogen bond (HB) donor to form strong HB interactions.

Deprotonated sulfamic acid and its homodimers: Does sulfamic acid adopt zwitterion during cluster growth?

We present a joint experimental and computational study on the geometric and electronic structures of deprotonated sulfamic acid (SA) clusters [(SA)n–H]− (n = 1, 2) employing negative ion photoelectron spectroscopy and high-level ab initio calculations. The photoelectron spectra provide the vertical/adiabatic detachment energy (VDE/ADE) of the sulfamate anion (SM−) H2N●SO3− at 4.85 ± 0.05 and 4.58 ± 0.08 eV, respectively, and the VDE and ADE of the SM−●SA dimer at 6.41 ± 0.05 and 5.87 ± 0.08 eV, respectively. The significantly increased electron binding energies of the dimer confirm the enhanced electronic stability upon the addition of one SA molecule. The CCSD(T)-predicted VDEs/ADEs agree excellently with the experimental data, confirming the identified structures as the most stable ones. Two types of dimer isomers possessing different hydrogen bonding (HB) motifs are identified, corresponding to SM− binding to a zwitterionic SA (SM−●SAz) and a canonical SA (SM−●SAc), respectively. Two N–H⋯O HBs and one superior O–H⋯O HB are formed in the lowest-lying SM−●SAc, while SM−●SAz has three moderate N–H⋯O HBs, with the former being 4.71 kcal/mol more stable. Further theoretical analyses reveal that the binding strength advantage of SM−●SAc over SM−●SAz arises from its significant contributions of orbital interactions between fragments, illustrating that sulfamate strongly interacts with its parent SA acid and preferably chooses the canonical SA in the subsequent cluster formations. Given the prominent presence of SA, this study provides the first evidence that the canonical dimer model of sulfamic acid should exist as a superior configuration during cluster growth.

Photoelectron Spectroscopy Confirms the Gas-Phase Stability of the C3O2- Anion.

The carbon suboxide anion with an asymmetric zigzag structure, C3O2-, which was recently characterized in a solid neon matrix, has not been observed in the gas phase. Here, we have experimentally generated C3O2- in a supersonic plasma jet expansion and studied it by negative ion photoelectron spectroscopy. A spectral analysis based on the calculated Franck-Condon factors, in combination with quantum chemical calculations, has for the first time yielded a determination of the electron affinity of the neutral carbon suboxide, EA = +0.48(8) eV. Molecular orbital (MO) analysis indicates that, upon linear-to-zigzag geometric change, additional σ-π MO mixing significantly reduces the energy of the singly occupied MO of C3O2- and thus stabilizes the negative ion in the gas phase. This work provides a benchmark understanding of the gas-phase stability of the C3O2- anion.

How generic is iodide-tagging photoelectron spectroscopy: An extended investigation on the Gly·X- (Gly = glycine, X = Cl or Br) complexes.

We report a joint negative ion photoelectron spectroscopy (NIPES) and quantum chemical computational study on glycine-chloride/bromide complexes (denoted Gly·X-, X = Cl/Br) in close comparison to the previously studied Gly·I- cluster ion. Combining experimental NIPE spectra and theoretical calculations, various Gly·X- complexes were found to adopt the same types of low-lying isomers, albeit with different relative energies. Despite more congested spectral profiles for Gly·Cl- and Gly·Br-, spectral assignments were accomplished with the guidance of the knowledge learned from Gly·I-, where a larger spin-orbit splitting of iodine afforded well-resolved, recognizable spectral peaks. Three canonical plus one zwitterionic isomer for Gly·Cl- and four canonical conformers for Gly·Br- were experimentally identified and characterized in contrast to the five canonical ones observed for Gly·I- under similar experimental conditions. Taken together, this study investigates both genericity and variations in binding patterns for the complexes composed of glycine and various halides, demonstrating that iodide-tagging is an effective spectroscopic means to unravel diverse ion-molecule binding motifs for cluster anions with congested spectral bands by substituting the respective ion with iodide.

Photogeneration of singlet oxygen catalyzed by hexafluoroisopropanol for selective degradation of dyes

Singlet oxygen (1O2) shows great potential for selective degradation of dyes in environmental remediation of wastewater. In this study, we showcased that 1O2 can be effectively generated from an anion complex composed of deprotonated hexafluoroisopropanol anion ([HFIP-H]‒) with hydroperoxyl radical (⋅HO2) via ultraviolet (UV) photodetachment. Electronic structure calculations and cryogenic negative ion photoelectron spectroscopy unveil critical proton transfer upon complex formation and electron ejection, effectively photoconverting prevalent triplet ground state 3O2 to long-lived excited 1O2, stabilized by nearby HFIP. Inspired by this spectroscopic study, a novel "photogeneration" strategy is proposed to produce 1O2 with the incorporation of atmospheric O2 and HFIP, acting as a catalyst. Conceptually, the designed catalytic cycle upon UV irradiation and electron injection is able to achieve different degradations of dye molecules in a controllable fashion from decolorization to complete mineralization, shedding new light on potential water purification.

Properties of Gaseous Deprotonated L-Cysteine S-Sulfate Anion [cysS-SO3]-: Intramolecular H-Bond Network, Electron Affinity, Chemically Active Site, and Vibrational Fingerprints.

L-cysteine S-sulfate, Cys-SSO3H, and their derivatives play essential roles in biological chemistry and pharmaceutical synthesis, yet their intrinsic molecular properties have not been studied to date. In this contribution, the deprotonated anion [cysS-SO3]- was introduced in the gas phase by electrospray and characterized by size-selected, cryogenic, negative ion photoelectron spectroscopy. The electron affinity of the [cysS-SO3]• radical was determined to be 4.95 ± 0.10 eV. In combination with theoretical calculations, it was found that the most stable structure of [cysS-SO3]- (S1) is stabilized via three intramolecular hydrogen bonds (HBs); i.e., one O-H⋯⋯N between the -COOH and -NH2 groups, and two N-H⋯⋯O HBs between -NH2 and -SO3, in which the amino group serves as both HB acceptor and donor. In addition, a nearly iso-energetic conformer (S2) with the formation of an O-H⋯⋯N-H⋯⋯O-S chain-type binding motif competes with S1 in the source. The most reactive site of the molecule susceptible for electrophilic attacks is the linkage S atom. Theoretically predicted infrared spectra indicate that O-H and N-H stretching modes are the fingerprint region (2800 to 3600 cm-1) to distinguish different isomers. The obtained information lays out a foundation to better understand the transformation and structure-reactivity correlation of Cys-SSO3H in biologic settings.

Annihilating Actinic Photochemistry of the Pyruvate Anion by One and Two Water Molecules.

Photochemical behaviors of pyruvic acid in multiple phases have been extensively studied, while those of its conjugate base, the pyruvate anion (CH3COCOO-, PA-) are less understood and remain contradictory in gaseous versus aqueous phases. Here in this article, we report a joint experimental and theoretical study combining cryogenic, wavelength-resolved negative ion photoelectron spectroscopy (NIPES) and high-level quantum chemical computations to investigate PA- actinic photochemistry and its dependence on microsolvation in the gas phase. PA-·nH2O (n = 0-5) clusters were generated and characterized, with their low-lying isomers identified. NIPES conducted at multiple wavelengths across the PA- actinic regime revealed the PA- photochemistry extremely sensitive to its hydration extent. While bare PA- anions exhibit active photoinduced dissociations that generate the acetyl (CH3CO-), methide (CH3-) anions, their corresponding radicals, and slow electrons, one single attached water molecule results in significant suppression with a subsequent second water being able to completely block all dissociation pathways, effectively annihilating all PA- photochemical reactivities. The underlying dissociation mechanisms of PA-·nH2O (n = 0-2) clusters are proposed involving nπ* excitation, dehydration, decarboxylation, and further CO loss. Since the photoexcited dihydrate does not have sufficient energy to overcome the full dehydration barrier before PA- could fragmentate, the PA- dissociation pathway is completely blocked, with the energy most likely released via loss of one water and internal electronic and vibrational relaxations. The insight unraveled in this work provides a much-needed critical link to connect the seemingly conflicting PA- actinic chemistry between the gas and condensed phases.

Manifesting Direction-Specific Complexation in [HFIP-H·H2O2]-: Exclusive Formation of a High-Lying Conformation.

Size-selective, negative ion photoelectron spectroscopy in conjunction with quantum chemical calculations is employed to investigate the geometric and electronic structures of a protype system in catalytic olefin epoxidation research, that is, deprotonated hexafluoroisopropanol ([HFIP-H]-) complexed with hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). Spectral assignments and molecular electrostatic surface analyses unveil a surprising prevalent existence of a high-lying isomer with asymmetric dual hydrogen-bonding configuration that is preferably formed driven by influential direction-specific electrostatic interactions upon H2O2 approaching [HFIP-H]- anion. Subsequent inspections of molecular orbitals, charge, and spin density distributions indicate the occurrence of partial charge transfer from [HFIP-H]- to H2O2 upon hydrogen-bonding interactions. Accompanied with electron detachment, a proton transfer occurs to form the neutral complex of [HFIP·HOO•] structure. This work conspicuously illustrates the importance of directionality encoded in intermolecular interactions involving asymmetric and complex molecules, while the produced hydroperoxyl radical HOO• offers a possible new pathway in olefin epoxidation chemistry.

Isolated [B2(CN)6]2-: Small Yet Exceptionally Stable Nonmetal Dianion.

We report the observation of a small, yet remarkably stable, metal-free hexacyanodiborate dianion [B2(CN)6]2- in the gas phase. Negative ion photoelectron spectroscopy (NIPES) was employed to measure its spectra at multiple laser wavelengths, yielding a 1.9 eV electron binding energy (EBE) ─a remarkably high value of electronic stability and a ∼2.60 eV repulsive Coulomb barrier (RCB) for electron detachment. This rationalizes the observation of this dianion, although homolytic charge-separation dissociation into two [B(CN)3]•- is energetically favorable. Quantum chemical calculations demonstrate a D3d staggered conformation for both the dianion and radical monoanion, and the calculated EBE and RCB match the experimental values well. The simulated density of states spectrum reproduces all measured electronic transitions, while the simulated vibrational progressions for the ground state transition cover a much narrower EBE range compared to the experimental band, indicating appreciable auto-photodetachment via electronically excited dianion resonances.

Observation and Exploitation of Spin-Orbit Excited Dipole-Bound States in Ion-Molecule Clusters.

We report an observation of spin-orbit excited dipole-bound states (DBSs) in arginine-iodide complexes (Arg·I-) by using temperature-dependent, wavelength-resolved "iodide-tagging" negative ion photoelectron spectroscopy. The observed DBSs are bound to the spin-orbit excited I(2P1/2) level of the neutral Arg·I complex in zwitterionic conformations and identified based on the resonant enhancement due to spin-orbit electronic autodetachment from the I(2P1/2) DBS to the I(2P3/2) neutral ground state. The observed DBS binding energies are correlated to the dipole moments of neutral Arg·I isomers and tautomers. This work thus demonstrates a new and generic spectroscopic approach to identify ion-molecule cluster conformations based on their distinguishable dipole moments.

Measuring Electronic Structure of Multiply Charged Anions to Understand Their Chemistry: A Case Study on Gaseous Polyhedral closo-Borate Dianions.

Research on multiply charged anions (MCAs) in the gas phase has been intensively performed during the past decades, mainly to understand fundamental molecular physics phenomena, for example, intramolecular Coulomb repulsion and existence of the repulsive Coulomb barrier. However, the relevance of these investigations with respect to understanding MCAs' chemistry appears often vague. Here, we discuss how insights into the electronic structure obtained from negative ion photoelectron spectroscopy (NIPES) combined with theoretical calculations and collision-induced dissociation can provide a fundamental understanding of the intrinsic chemical reactivity of MCAs and their fragments. This is exemplified in our studies on polyhedral closo-borate dianions [BnXn]2- (n = 6, 10, 11, 12; X = H, F-I, CN) and their fragment ions. For example, the rational design of closo-borate dianions with specific electronic properties is described, which leads to generating highly reactive fragments. Depending on the dianionic precursor, these fragments are tuned to either bind noble gases effectively or activate small molecules like CO and N2. The intrinsic electronic properties of closo-borate dianions are further compared to their electrochemistry in solutions, revealing solvent effects on the redox potentials. Neutral host molecules such as cyclodextrins are found to bind strongly to [BnXn]2-, and gas phase NIPES provides insights into the intrinsic host-guest interactions. Finally, outlooks including the direct NIPES of molecular fragment ions that cannot be generated in the condensed phase and their utilization in preparative mass spectrometry are discussed.

Simulation of Negative Ion Photoelectron Spectroscopy Using a Nuclear Ensemble Approach: Implications from a Nuclear Vibration Effect.

The negative ion photoelectron spectroscopy (NIPES) has been proven to be a powerful technique to reveal the electronic structures and spectroscopic properties of various cluster anions/radicals with very high precision. However, direct comparisons of the theoretical NIPES with experimental measurements remain challenging. Particularly the nuclear vibration effect and the ionization probability are typically ignored in reproducing NIPES. In this work, the NIPES of three representative anions (NaS5-, P2N3-, and HCPN3-) with significantly different spectral features were simulated by combining the nuclear ensemble approach (NEA) and Dyson orbitals (DOs). Overall, the simulated NIPES are in good agreement with the experimentally determined ones, confirming the robustness of such a strategy. The analysis of frontier molecular orbitals (MOs) and DOs further suggests the similar mixed characters for the first ionized doublet (D0) and adjacent D1 states of NaS5- with distributions on the side sulfur atoms. And the D0 of P2N3* is confirmed as the lowest energy σ radical state; however, the D0 of HCPN3* should possess a mixture of π and σ electrons by taking into account the nuclear vibration effect. Next, the broader vibrational distribution and stronger main vibration modes of P2N3- and HCPN3- explain why the nuclear vibration possesses a more pronounced influence in reproducing their NIPES while it has little effect on NaS5-. Last, the limitations based on the double-harmonic approximation model and density of state method were also discussed, highlighting that the ionization probability and orbital relaxation effect during the ionization process should be reasonably considered.

Electrophilic Properties of 2'-Deoxyadenosine···Thymine Dimer: Photoelectron Spectroscopy and DFT Studies.

The anion radical of the 2′-deoxyadenosine···thymine (dAT•–) pair has been investigated experimentally and theoretically in the gas phase. By employing negative-ion photoelectron spectroscopy (PES), we have registered a spectrum typical for the valence-bound anion, featuring a broad peak at the electron-binding energy (EBE) between ∼1.5 and 2.2 eV with the maximum at ∼1.9 eV. The measured value of the adiabatic electron affinity (AEA) for dAT was estimated to be ∼1.1 eV. Calculations performed at the M06-2X/6-31++G(d,p) level revealed that the structure, where thymine is coordinated to the sugar of dA by two hydrogen bonds, is responsible for the observed PES signal. The AEAG and the vertical detachment energy of 0.91 and 1.68 eV, respectively, calculated for this structure reproduce the experimental values well. The role of the possible proton transfer in the stabilization of anionic radical complexes is discussed.

The electron affinity of the uranium atom.

The results of a combined experimental and computational study of the uranium atom are presented with the aim of determining its electron affinity. Experimentally, the electron affinity of uranium was measured via negative ion photoelectron spectroscopy of the uranium atomic anion, U-. Computationally, the electron affinities of both thorium and uranium were calculated by conducting relativistic coupled-cluster and multi-reference configuration interaction calculations. The experimentally determined value of the electron affinity of the uranium atom was determined to be 0.309 ± 0.025eV. The computationally predicted electron affinity of uranium based on composite coupled cluster calculations and full four-component spin-orbit coupling was found to be 0.232eV. Predominately due to a better convergence of the coupled cluster sequence for Th and Th-, the final calculated electron affinity of Th, 0.565eV, was in much better agreement with the accurate experimental value of 0.608eV. In both cases, the ground state of the anion corresponds to electron attachment to the 6d orbital.

Assessment of DFT methods for the prediction of detachment energies and electronic structures of complex and multiply charged anions

In this work, we assess the ability of different density functional theory methods to reproduce the vertical/adiabatic detachment energies (VDEs/ADEs) of a series of 40 anions, including monoanions versus multiply charged anions (MCAs) and covalent versus noncovalent interaction. The statistical analysis of errors is firstly performed by comparing the theoretical values with the experimental benchmark data obtained from the negative ion photoelectron spectroscopy (NIPES). The proposed optimally tuned range-separated (OTRS) functionals are proved to not only well reproduce the experimental VDEs/ADEs, but also simulate experimental NIPES. The result implies a more serious issue of delocalization error for MCAs and a balanced description of electron-rich/-deficient region of anions is necessary. The radius of the spherically symmetric average electron localization function (ELF) region is demonstrated as a useful descriptor for the characterization of electronic structure of anionic systems and a quasilinear fitting model is proposed to efficiently obtain their OTRS parameters.

Photoelectron Spectroscopy and Theoretical Study on Monosolvated Cyanate Analogue Clusters ECX-·Sol (ECX- = NCSe-, AsCSe-, and AsCS-; Sol = H2O, CH3CN).

Six monosolvated cyanate analogue clusters ECX-·Sol (ECX- = NCSe-, AsCSe-, and AsCS-; Sol = H2O and CH3CN) were investigated using negative ion photoelectron spectroscopy (NIPES). NIPES experiments show that these clusters possess similar spectra overall compared to their respective isolated ECX- anions but shift to higher electron binding energy with CH3CN solvent, stabilizing the excess electrons slightly more than H2O. For the ECX-·H2O series, vertical detachment energies and their increments relative to the bare species are measured to be 3.700/0.370, 3.085/0.415, and 3.085/0.430 eV for NCSe-, AsCSe- and AsCS-, respectively, while the corresponding values in the ECX-·CH3CN series are 3.835/0.505, 3.145/0.475, and 3.135/0.480 eV. Ab initio electronic structure calculations indicate that the excess charges were located at the terminal N and Se atoms in NCSe- and migrated to the central C atom in AsCSe- and AsCS-. For NCSe-, the solvation is driven by the interactions with the two negatively charged terminal ends, while for AsCSe- and AsCS-, the solvation revolves around the interactions with the central C atom, where all the excess negative charge is concentrated. Two nearly degenerate isomers for NCSe-·H2O are identified, one forming a single strong N···H-O hydrogen bond (HB) and the other featuring a bidentate HB with two hydroxyl H atoms pointing to N and Se ends. In contrast, the negative central C atom in AsCSe-/AsCS- allows the formation of a bifurcated HB with H2O. Similar effects are observed for the acetonitrile case, in which the three H atoms of the methyl group interact with the two negatively charged terminal ends in NCSe-, while preferring to bind to the central negative carbon atom in AsCSe-/AsCS-. The different binding motifs derived in this work may suggest different solvation properties in NCSe- versus AsCSe-/AsCS- with the former anion leading to asymmetric solvation at the N end of the solute, while the latter species creates more "isotropic" solvation around the central C equatorial plane.

Observation of Conformational Simplification upon N-Methylation on Amino Acid Iodide Clusters.

This Letter reports a counterintuitive observation that methylation of the glycine-iodide cluster leads to fewer conformations and spectroscopic simplicity. Cryogenic "iodide-tagging" negative ion photoelectron spectroscopy (NIPES) is used to probe specific binding sites of three N-methylated glycine derivatives, i.e., N-methylglycine (sarcosine), N,N-dimethylglycine, and N,N,N-trimethylglycine (glycine betaine). NIPES reveals a progressive spectral simplification of the iodide clusters with increasing methylation due to fewer contributing structures. Low energy conformers and tautomers of each cluster are computationally identified, and those observed in the experiments are assigned based on excellent agreement between the NIPE spectra and theoretical simulations. Zwitterionic cluster structures are found to be less stable than their canonical forms and do not contribute to the observed spectra. This work demonstrates the power of iodide-tagging NIPES in probing conformations of amino acid-iodide clusters and provides a molecular level understanding on the effect of methyl substitution on amino acid binding sites.

Cryogenic Vibrationally Resolved Photoelectron Spectroscopy of OH-(H2O): Confirmation of Multidimensional Franck-Condon Simulation Results for the Transition State of the OH + H2O Reaction.

We present a transition state spectroscopic study of the OH + H2O reaction using the experimental technique of cryogenic negative ion photoelectron spectroscopy (NIPES). The recorded NIPE spectrum at 193 nm exhibits multiple vibrational progressions that include excitations to the shared H atom antisymmetric stretching mode with an interval of 0.32 eV as well as other progressions, mainly involving the H bending and O···O symmetric stretching modes. The vertical detachment energy (VDE) was measured at 3.53 eV, whereas an upper limit for the adiabatic detachment energy (ADE) was estimated at 2.90 eV. These values are in excellent agreement with the theoretically computed values of 3.51 and 2.87 eV, respectively, obtained at the CCSD(T)/aug-cc-pV5Z level of theory. The recorded NIPE spectrum is in very good agreement when compared to the one recently reported from four-dimensional Franck-Condon simulations, in which a similar spectral profile was predicted. Besides observing the ground state, we identified a charge-transfer excited state in the form of [OH-(H2O)+] with a relative energy of 1.39 eV, well matching the previous prediction of 1.36 eV.

Electron Affinity and Electronic Structure of Hexafluoroacetone (HFA) Revealed by Photodetaching the [HFA]•- Radical Anion.

A great deal of effort has been focused on developing a metal-free catalytic system for epoxidation of unreactive alkenes. Fluoroketones are thought as remarkably promising catalysts for epoxidation reactions. The combination of fluorinated alcohols and catalytic amounts of hexafluoroacetone (HFA) gives a versatile and effective medium for epoxidation of various olefins with hydrogen peroxide. However, the fundamental physicochemical properties of HFA remained largely unclear, although they were very important to understand the related interactions. Here, we performed a joint study on the electron affinity and electronic structure of HFA employing negative ion photoelectron (NIPE) spectroscopy and quantum chemistry calculations. Two distinct bands with complicated vibrational progressions were observed in the 193 nm NIPE spectrum. The adiabatic/vertical detachment energies (ADE/VDE) were derived to be 1.42/2.06 and 4.43/4.86 eV for the ground singlet state and excited triplet state, respectively. Using the optimized geometries and vibrational frequencies of the anion and the neutral, the Franck-Condon factors were calculated for electron detachments to produce HFA in its lowest singlet and triplet states. Good agreements are obtained hereby for both bands between the experimental and calculated NIPE spectra, when taking into account combination vibrational excitations, unequivocally revealing that HFA possesses a singlet ground state with a giant singlet-triplet energy difference (ΔEST). The electron affinity (EA) and ΔEST of HFA were therefore determined to be EA = 1.42 ± 0.02 eV and ΔEST = -3.01 eV.

Cryogenic "Iodide-Tagging" Photoelectron Spectroscopy: A Sensitive Probe for Specific Binding Sites of Amino Acids.

This work showcases cryogenic and temperature-dependent "iodide-tagging" photoelectron spectroscopy to probe specific binding sites of amino acids using the glycine-iodide complex (Gly·I-) as a case study. Multiple Gly·I- isomers were generated from ambient electrospray ionization and kinetically isolated in a cryogenic ion trap. These structures were characterized with temperature-dependent "iodide-tagging" negative ion photoelectron spectroscopy (NIPES), where iodide was used as the "messenger" to interpret electronic energetics and structural information of various Gly·I- isomers. Accompanied by theoretical computations and Franck-Condon simulations, a total of five cluster structures have been identified along with their various binding motifs. This work demonstrates that "iodide-tagging" NIPES is a powerful general means for probing specific binding interactions in biological molecules of interest.
